Assam CM demands Rs 1200 crore from Centre

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Tuesday urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to immediately release Rs 1200 crore as interim central grant from the National Calamity Contingency Fund as post-flood requirement.

In a memorandum submitted to the Prime Minister after his aerial survey of flood affected areas, Gogoi said that the state would require an amount of about Rs 2156 crore and by the time complete reports are received the figure would swell to Rs 3000 crore.

The Chief Minister, who made a detailed presentation to the Prime Minister about the intensity of the flood and the damage caused, said that the government had the confidence that additional central assistance as cent per cent grant will be sanctioned to the state after the visit of the central team.

Urging the Prime Minister to strengthen the Brahmaputra board with adequate number of technical experts drawn from persons with international exposure in successfully managing major rivers as the Nile, Mekong, Amazon and the Mississipi.
