Assam floods: Death toll mounts to 43

The current wave of floods has so far affected more than 50 lakh people in 24 of the 27 districts in Assam.

The flood situation in Assam further worsened on Thursday following incessant rains in the catchment areas. The death toll from floods have mounted to 43, official sources said in Guwahati.

The current wave of floods has so far affected more than 50 lakh people in 24 of the 27 districts in the state.

Heavy rains have inundated vast areas of land in both lower and upper Assam districts, while in Guwahati many areas are waterlogged with the Brahmaputra flowing above the danger level in Guwahati.

The current wave of floods, one of the worst in recent years, has affected more than 6,500 villages, damaged more than four lakh houses and five lakh hectares of crop land.

Road communication on NH-31, NH-37 and NH-53 remains disrupted in several places due to overtopping, while rail communication has been disrupted in the north bank of the river due to flooding of tracks.
