The deafening roar of the crowd throughout the day; the delirious chants drowning every other sound, even the appealing from the bowlers - it was back to happy hunting for India.

It was a day, which started on a disappointing note but ended in smiles all around, with Anil Kumble grinning from ear to ear as he walked back to the pavilion with a bag of seven wickets in a spell of 10.3 destructive overs which saw Australians slide from 136 for no loss to 234 all out.

The Bangalore wicket was judged as wicked and even unplayable by all those who had a look at it before the first Test began. But its slow, even docile behaviour re-emphasised cricket's age-old dictum: predict the nature of the wicket at your own risk. Sufficiently chastened and probably wiser by the experience, none dared to even pretend to know anything about the surface here.

And during the first two hours of play in the morning the wisemen smiled, nodded their heads and dared to make a prediction again: It's a perfect batting wicket with the ball coming on nicely to the bat. Some even went to the extent of saying that Australia would end up with a score of 370 by the end of the day's play.
