Avoid junk food to remain healthy

He was speaking at the inaugural function of Cancer Awareness Programme- a part of 'AROI UPCON-2006', the XIX Annual convention of the Radiation Oncologists of India State Chapter hosted by the Regional Cancer Centre, Kamala Nehru Memorial Hospital.
Ashim Kumar said teachers could play a greater role in the cancer awareness programme.
"The teachers should convince students to give up junk food, which has carcinogenic elements. However, another aspect of cancer control is to stop people from taking treatment from quacks in rural areas. The message should be spread either through students or volunteers that in case of any malignancy, the patient should immediately consult an oncologist," he said.
He also gave prizes to the winners of 'Run 4 Cancer', a marathon race of school children for cancer awareness, held on November 7.
Medical superintendent of Kamala Nehru Memorial Hospital welcomed the guest. Additional Director Medical and Head of Department Radiation Oncology Dr B Paul Thalliath spoke on the objective of convention, ie 'Conformal Radiation Therapy'.
Dr Radha Ghosh introduced the guest. Prof Krishna Mukherjee proposed a vote of thanks.
In the morning session, Prof ML Bhatt of KGMU delivered lecture on causes and prevention of cancer. Prof MC Pant discussed 'Guidelines for the Teachers' and Prof NR Dutta of SGPGI spoke on 'Developments in Cancer Treatment'. Dr Paul said the convention would be formally inaugurated by Dr Kamal Sahani, Oncologist and Director Medical Education, UP, in the evening.
