A meeting of the Madurai Rural District Committee of the DMK chaired by its leader Arunachalam resolved to request Azhagiri to contest the Lok Sabha elections from Madurai, party sources said here today.

The meeting also thanked Karunanidhi, General Secretary K Anbazhagan and Treasurer M.K.Stalin for appointing Azhagiri as the Organising Secretary of South Zone, they said.

Considered the party strongman in the southern districts, Azhagiri, who had been refusing to accept any party post in over the years, was appointed to the newly-created post last week after he led the party to an impressive win in the Jan 9 byelection to state assembly from Tirumangalam constituency.
