This was Navketan's second production, after Afsar. Dev Anand, the producer, gave Guru Dutt a platform to showcase his expertise through this film. Baazi  is the story of an urban unemployed youth forced to take a plunge into crime because of circumstances.

Madan (Dev Anand) is a small time gambler forced into joining the owner of the Star Hotel, a mysterious and shadowy criminal, to pay for his sister's medical expenses. His sister is treated by a doctor Rajani (Kalpana Kartik) who loves Madan. But a cop, Ramesh (K. Dhawan), also loves Rajani. The cabaret dancer at the club (Geeta Bali) is in love with Madan. What happens when Madan decides to leave the crime worlds and live like a respectable citizen is the film all about.

Geeta Bali's excellent performance in the film is still remembered. And the unforgettable music by S D Burman, who experimented with the Ghazal format, in its orchestration, for the first time with the song Tadbeer se bigdi hui taqdeer bana le was an instant hit.

With this film Dev Anand picked up his peculiar style, which kept him on top for decades to come and with the success of this film he joined the leagues of Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor.
