The All Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi Students’ Association (ACKHSA) has called the shutdown from 5 a.m to protest against the alleged apathy of the Congress in converting the metre guage track to broad guage, ACKHSA General Secretary Rupam Nandi Purakayastha said.

The bandh was earlier called on April 12, the proposed date for the visit of the Congress President, but as the party changed her programme to next day in view of the bandh, the organisation again deferred it by a day.

“We, therefore, decided to defer our bandh to April 13 to disrupt her programme in the constituency,” he added.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s proposed visit to Diphu to address an election rally on April 7 was also cancelled in view of the 36-hour Karbi Anglong bandh called by the militant outfit Karbi Longri National Liberation Front (KLNLF).

The Prime Minister had arrived at Dibrugarh on Wednesday but could not reach the venue of meeting due to heavy rains.
