A Railway Police Force (RPF) personnel was caught on camera mercilessly beating up a physically challenged man at Howrah railway station in West Bengal.
While railway officials initially denied it, the assault which took place on Wednesday night was recorded by a man on his mobile phone and the footage that was leaked showed the RPF personnel thrashing the man.
In the video clip, the policeman is seen hitting the man, who was lying on the ground on platform No 1, with a lathi and and sitting on him. He was rescued by passengers present on the scene.
Sources in Eastern Railway said the person came Howrah from New Delhi to visit Gangasagar, but had started begging on the platform.
According to reports, the policeman had asked him to move out of the station. He began hitting him when he took unduly long to comply and did not leave.
The person was reportedly taken to a hospital in Howrah but was not admitted there. He has been untraceable since then.
Railway sources, however, claimed a departmental inquiry has been initiated in this regard.
