The film will be based on an article written by CJ Chivers, the Moscow correspondent for the New York Times, that appeared in the June 2005 issue of Esquire magazine that covered the siege of a Russian elementary school by Chechen rebels in 2004, and which tragically ended with the deaths of 300 of the 1,100 hostages and 31 terrorists.

According to Contactmusic, the movie will be based on recollections of the survivors whom Chivers interviewed when he returned to Beslan 18 months after the massacre.

Grazer said the Esquire article "captures for the first time the human aspect of a horrendous event" and that the story "cried out to be told on the big screen."
