Microsoft chief Bill Gates has topped the list of business magazine Forbes' 400 Richest Americans list for the ninth consecutive year, while India-born Amar Gopal Bose is ranked 278.

According to figures made available on Friday, with a net worth of $48 billion, Gates managed to retain the top rank in the current year despite shares of the global technology giant being flat over the past year.
Bose, maker of Bose sound solutions, has bettered his ranking in the Forbes list to take the 278th slot.
The 75-year-old's net worth has risen to $1 billion. A graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Fulbright scholar, Bose was ranked 319 in the previous year's list of richest Americans.
Renowned investor Warren Buffett bagged the second slot in the list with a net worth of $41 billion.
The profits of Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway doubled in 2003, thanks to a good year for insurance units Geico and General Re, said the survey.
Forbes said the combined net worth of the US' wealthiest climbed to $1 trillion, up $45 billion in the previous 12 months.
"The economy's recovery may be a little shaky, but you wouldn't know it from looking at this year's Forbes 400.
"With a $750 million admission price, nine-digit fortunes are an endangered species here - 78 percent of the people on this year's list are billionaires."
