UNION GOVERNMENT recently accorded approval to a bio-diesel project through Ratanjot plantation in Sehore district. As per an official release today, the MP Minor Forest Produce Federation had sent the project for approval to the Union Science and Technology Ministry in August 2005.

The project envisages plantation of jatropha plants in private and waste forestland. A location to undertake the project has been chosen in the Bhilkheda forest village in Sehore district. The project’s duration would be three years and Rs 25 lakh will be spent on it.

Works undertaken in the project would include setting up a nursery, free distribution of plants to farmers, plantation in 100 acre forestland, training, marketing and installation of bio-diesel extraction unit. Technical support would be taken from the State Forest Research Institute, Jabalpur from time to time.

The project aims at inspiring farmers to undertake plantation on the sides of their agricultural fields and on wastelands adjoining the project area. The nursery works would be done with assistance of the self-help groups.
