Congress today accused the BJP leaders of carrying out a "low level" campaign targeting Sonia Gandhi and her family and said it was being done under a "well-thought" strategy.
It also sought an "apology" from Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani for "indecent and vulgar" remarks against the Gandhis.
"It seems that senior BJP leaders can't rise beyond cheap gimmicks and abusive language. Use of such gutter-type language is the well-thought policy and strategy of this party and its leaders....Modi had issued vulgar, poisonous and hatred statements in the presence of Advani.
"We seek an apology from Modi and Advani for their abusive and vulgar language against Gandhi and her family members," party spokesman Abhishek Singhvi told reporters here.
Alleging that Advani "silence" speaks that he had encouraged Modi to speak these language, he said even Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee did not condemn these "indecent" statements by his party leaders.
Recalling how Modi, during assembly elections in Gujarat, had used unparliamentary remarks against the Chief Election Commissioner, he said senior BJP leaders Pramod Mahajan, Vinay Katiyar, VHP leader Praveen Togadia and others joined the fray in "personalised" attacks against Congress party and its leaders that showed their real "move, face and character".
