BJP releases first list for Assam polls

In the first phase of assembly elections in the state, 65 of 126 seats would going to polls on April three.

The names of BJP Assam unit vice- president Dhruba Prasad Baishya, legislature party chief Bimolangsu Roy, former Union Minister Bijoya Chakraborty and party CEC member Ramen Deka figure in the first list of 60 candidates cleared by BJP central election committee.

Party General Secretary and Assam polls in-charge Pramod Mahajan said in a statement faxed from New Delhi that names for the first phase of polls were cleared in a central election committee meeting presided over by party chief Rajnath Singh on Friday.

In the first phase of assembly elections in the state, 65 of 126 seats would going to polls on April three.

The names of five other candidates for the first phase of polls would be announced later, Mahajan said.

The party has nominated five Scheduled Caste, five Scheduled Tribe, two Muslim, nine women and eight candidates of the tea community in the first list, he said.
