The blast struck a convoy on a highway between the city of Kandahar and the border town of Spin Boldak in insurgency-hit southern Kandahar province, a district chief said.

"There was a car bomb attack against a Canadian convoy on the main road," said Akhtar Mohammad, head of Daman district where the explosion occurred.

The area was immediately sealed off by troops and was off limits to reporters, he told the agency.

Canadian coalition forces in Kandahar would only say they were investigating "a situation".

An Afghan army officer told the agency on condition of anonymity that there were believed to have been casualties besides the suicide attacker.
