Two leaders of the agitating staff Dr Salim Naik and Dr Arvind Tripathi had managed to persuade Justice Faizanuddin to broker compromise with the BMHRC Trust chairman Justice AM Ahmadi.

The former Lokayukta, who is a personal friend of Justice Ahmadi, got an appointment with the latter for discussion on Thursday and was to lead the group of agitating employees to New Delhi himself.

However, at the last moment Dr Naik and Dr Tripathi took off to New Delhi by themselves on Wednesday night without Justice Faizanuddin. But Justice Ahmadi refused to entertain the delegation of the agitating employees, thus ending whatever chance they had of resolving the crisis.

“ It was a surprising move by these leaders,’’ an apparently irked Justice Faizanuddin said while talking to Hindustan Times. “ They had the audacity to call me up from New Delhi after Justice Ahmadi refused to meet them. I naturally told them that I have nothing more to do in the matter.’’

The former Lokayukta said out of concern for the gas victims and other patients and the fact that Bhopal has very poor medical facilities, he had agreed to intervene in the matter on behalf of the agitating employees. Justice Faizanuddin held discussions with chairman of the Trust a number of times.

“ Justice Ahmadi was positive to the issue. I was expecting that the stalemate would be resolved today,’’ he said.
He further mentioned that Justice Ahmadi had clearly told him that he would not hold discussions with the agitating employees directly, but gave an appointment to him (Justice Faizanuddin) for Thursday, saying that he could bring along any number of persons with him.

Despite several attempts, the agitating doctors could not be contacted for their reactions. A meeting of BJP leaders Kailash Joshi and Kailash Sarang with the BMHRC chairman had come a cropper on Wednesday. Sources said that Justice Ahmadi told these leaders about the `indiscipline’ of the employees in details but offered to take them back if they applied afresh for the posts.

Meanwhile Sadhna Karnik of the Bhopal Gas Peedit Sangharsha Sahyog Samiti has charged the State Government with trying to hog the issue by sending out senior leaders of ruling party for deliberations.
