A police spokesman said officers went to the former Culture Club frontman's apartment in Lower Manhattan shortly after 3:00 am (0700 GMT) when the singer reported a burglary.
On arrival, the police determined that no burglary had taken place and also discovered a small stash of cocaine, the spokesman said.
The singer, whose real name is George O'Dowd, was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance and falsely reporting a burglary, he added.
Boy George briefly embarked on a solo singing career after leaving Culture Club in 1987, before beginning a successful career as DJ and launching fashion line B-Rude.
His musical "Taboo" closed on Broadway last year after a short run and generally poor reviews.
