A reward of Rs 1 lakh has not helped trace the man who raped and murdered a seven-year-old in Sewri on January 25.
Contractors Unity Constr-uctions announced the reward after the child, the daughter of daily wage earners at their site, was found dead in the 22-storey under-construction building.
She had been strangled with her pyjamas.
The police said there are about 1,700 workers at the site, which is being developed by Peninsula Limited. All the workers have been living at the site since work began.
“Unity Constructions has announced a reward of Rs 1 lakh to anyone who offers information that can help trace the culprit,” said Police Inspector Yashwant Gadekar. “But nobody has come forward.”
So far, the police have interrogated the developer, contractor, site supervisors, watchmen, 500 labourers and some locals. “The number of labourers working at the project being high, nobody has been able to ascertain if anyone has gone missing after the incident,” Gadekar added.
Meanwhile, a post-mortem report confirmed that Ashima was raped before being murdered. “We are sure that the accused is one of the labourers working at the site,” said an officer.
