THE UNION Government will soon set up a National Commission for Protection of Children’s Rights. Parliament has already passed the Bill paving the way for creation of commission for children.

Minister of State for Human Resources Development Kanti Singh gave this information while inaugurating the two-day regional meet on “Role of voluntary organisations in social development,” organised by National Institute of Public Cooperation and Child Development, here today.
She said there was a proposal for setting up State Commission for Protection of Children’s Rights as well as Juvenile Courts in the states. He said out of the country’s total population, 40 per cent was children. “Children are the weakest section of the society as they are unorganized and the State has to take care of them,” she said.
The minister further said that the NGOs had a very significant role to play in creating social awareness among the masses and help the government implement its welfare schemes. Speaking on the occasion, State Minister for Child Development Ram Govind Chaudhary also said that the NGOs’ role was very important in successful implementation of the government policies. He, however, regretted that many NGOs had profit as their motive and not social service.
Many NGOs from UP and Bihar participated in the meet. They expressed their difficulties and offered suggestion for better coordination between administration and them.
The regional meet was one in the series of programmes, organised by NIPCCD, over the last few years to explore and expand linkages among different sectors such as voluntary sector, corporate sector, civil society organizations and other sectors.
