The deceased has been identified as Poomi Durai. The body was spotted by local fishermen on Monday.

Anandan, a police constable attached to Trincomallee Police Station in Sri Lanka, told PTI that the ID recovered from the body belonged to a N Poomi Durai of 13/15, NGO Colony, Kamaraj Nagar, Chennai-94.

The Sri Lankan Navy retrieved the body and handed it over to the government hospital at Trincomallee, with the Indian Embassy having been notified about the matter, he added.

Poomi Durai’s ID card had been issued by the Call Taxi Drivers’ Association in Chennai.

The body could have washed ashore due to ocean currents, an official said.
