THE FESTIVE fervour of Holi has occupied a large and varied market with the advent of ‘Phalgun’ month. With ‘Holika Dahan’ (the holy fire) tomorrow night and Holi on March 15, the shops and markets of Indore are crowded with designer water sprinklers’ (Pichkaris) from neighbouring China.
The Siyaganj area of Indore consists of various wholesale shops that sell colours, water sprinklers and metallic pumps for Holi. Most of the shopkeepers bring these items from Delhi. These goods mainly come to Delhi from China and hence are popularly known as ‘Chinese water sprinklers’ in the City.
Deepak Balchandani of Hema Agency told Hindustan Times that the latest among the designer Chinese water sprinklers are the musical ones ranging in price from Rs 100-Rs 300. The manufacturers have concentrated on the choice and selection of both girls and boys with water sprinklers in shapes of their favourite toys.
The designs targeted for boys comprise axe, sword, Indian flag, arrows, dragons, Spiderman, machine guns, bat-ball and oxygen cylinders - all equipped with pipes and pumps to spray colour water. The flag, dragon, medium size gun and weapons range between Rs 20-35. The Spiderman water sprinkler costs around Rs 300.
Interestingly, there are water sprinklers in forms of wiper, dolls, Teddy, cats, churner, keys and rockets, priced between Rs 20-50 for small girls. Other designs included cigarette shaped and scroll (pull down letters used in Mughal period). The cigarette shaped one costs just Rs 10.
The scroll water sprinkler has Holi message written on the pull down velvet spread. The golden colour frame contains hollow portion to store the coloured water. This scroll is priced at Rs 60.
There are beautiful aquamarine designs with gel and glitter inside the transparent cover of the water sprinkler. These glittery ones come in the price range of Rs 40-75. Class I student Alina voted for the sweet ‘Aladdin’s lamp’ that looked attractive and cost just Rs 3.
Some of the water sprinklers cover even the designs not introduced in the toy category. There are small statues of Chinese men and dolls and the pencil, pen and magical wand shaped water sprinklers inspired by television serials.
The musical water sprinklers consist of a separate button to play the music. The music can be heard automatically while spraying colour from the water sprinkler. These water sprinklers contain Spiderman logos, crystal balls at the top and even glitter sticks. The musical ones come in long shapes.
