THE ALL Saints’ Cathedral, said to be the most beautiful church in Northern India, was attacked by a former corporator and about two dozen of his supporters here this evening.

Former Samajwadi Party corporator Nizamuddin and his men hurled stones at the church. They also burnt the Pope’s effigy in protest against the Pontiff’s recent statement which drew sharp criticism from some members of a community. Some decorative light glasses in the church were damaged in the stone-pelting.

The former corporator is said to have taken this step immediately after coming out of the Nagar Nigam, which is hardly 50 metres from the church.

The Civil Lines police station is situated right across the road opposite the Nagar Nigam building.

But the Civil Lines police remained oblivious to the goings-on. When this fact was brought to the notice of Civil Lines inspector Algu Ram, he feigned ignorance about it. He even went on to ask why people had hurled stones at the church.

Faizabad report adds: Muttahida Mahaz president Mian Azhari criticised the comments of Pope Benedict XVI against the Prophet. He clarified that it was a non-political forum and it was not against any political party or the
government.
