Implementation of the project would give the city a facelift.

Among the features of the project are two overbridges, proper sewerage system, drainage system and a pipeline for supply of drinking water.

Municipal corporation administrator and district magistrate Hariom said the government had asked for a report on requirements of the city under the Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme. The municipal corporation officials had designed the project to fulfil the needs of the next 25 years. He said in the first phase, pipeline, drainage system and flyovers would be constructed. According to the project report, Rs 56.90 crore will be spent on pipelines in entire city and Rs 46.58 crore will be required for a drainage system. Besides, two overbridges at railway crossing near Tarang Talkies and Surajkund railway crossing will be constructed at a cost of Rs 23.52 lakh.

In the second phase, Rs 172.66 crore will be required for strengthening the water supply system, Rs 22.51 crore for drainage and Rs 57.42 crore for sewer lines. Twenty-five out of 60 wards of Gorakhpur Nagar Nigam have no water supply line. Sources said the city was divided in four zones. Outer wards of the Nagar Nigam were included in the first and second zones. The heart of the city and new areas will be included in the third and fourth zones. Hariom said in view of increasing traffic pressure on every road of the city, two flyovers had been planned. He admitted the sewer line was a major problem in the city. A plan had been drafted for it and the matter would be dealt with in the second phase.
