City to host national athletics meet from Oct 11

AS MANY AS 800 athletes of North , South, East and West Zones will assemble here to take part in 18th All-India Inter-Zonal Junior Athletics Championship to be organized for the first time in the city from October 11 to 13 at Madan Mohan Malaviya Stadium.

AS MANY AS 800 athletes of North , South, East and West Zones will assemble here to take part in 18th All-India Inter-Zonal Junior Athletics Championship to be organized for the first time in the city from October 11 to 13 at Madan Mohan Malaviya Stadium.

This was disclosed by District Magistrate Amrit Abhijat at a press conference here on Saturday. Abhijat said the district administration had made all arrangement to make the championship a big success.

The District Magistrate said that this was a major event for Allahabad. Therefore the state government has agreed to give Rs 5 lakh for holding the said championship.

On October 10, a torch rally would be taken out from High Court and pass through Civil Lines, Niranjan Talkies, Leader Road, Ghanta Ghar , Mansorvar, Chandralok and Civil Lines. The torch would be carried by international players AW Qalab, Pushpa Srivastava, Bhadur Prasad, Radheshayam, Abhinna Shyam Gupta, Pramod Tiwari and Sushant Saxena and others.

He said the inauguration ceremony would take place on Oct 11 morning while closing function on Oct 13 at 3 pm.

The district magistrate said that the Principal Secretary Sports and several judges of High court would take part as the guest in different categories.

Cultural programme and fireworks show would also be organised at concluding
function.

Athletics Federation of India Joint Secretary PK Srivastava said that this championship was scheduled for Lucknow but due to some technical reasons the event was shifted to Allahabad after getting full support from the district magistrate.

'Though we have no synthetic court at MMM Stadium but we will organise all events on grass court' he said.

Several equipment have been brought here to maintain the international standards. Efforts were being made to telecast all events live by Doordarshan, added Srivastava.

From every state two best athletes would take part in total 126 events.

Teams of Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Himanchal, Delhi, Chandigarh, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir , Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Tripura, Tamilnadu, Goa, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra etc would take part in championship.

Vijay Kumar, Regional Sports Officer and Secretary District Sports Encouragement Committee on the occasion said the entire stadium was being renovated to hold the event.
