Co-op Bank chairman held

POLICE ARRESTED 26 persons including the chairman of the District Co-operative Bank and mafiadon Vineet Singh, after conducting a raid at his house in Gola village under the Cholapur police station here on Sunday evening. Dozens of firearms, mobile phones and police uniforms were recovered from the scene. Acting on a tip off that two criminals, Ajay Singh and Babloo Singh, wanted in connection with the kidnapping of utensil trader, Ghanshyam Jain,were present at Vineet Singh?s house, cops in large number led by SP (Rural) Paresh Pandey.

Acting on a tip off that two criminals, Ajay Singh and Babloo Singh, wanted in connection with the kidnapping of utensil trader, Ghanshyam Jain, were present at Vineet Singh’s house, cops in large number led by SP (Rural) Paresh Pandey, raided the place and took 29 persons into custody for interrogation. Three persons, including the Youth Congress district president, were released while 26 were detained. Police recovered 16 firearms including rifles, pistols, and three luxury cars from his house.

Vineet Singh, along with 24 others, have been sent to 14 days judicial custody by the Court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (2nd), Rajendra Ram, here on Monday.

Amid tight security, police bought all the accused from the district jail. The defence counsel of the accused pleaded that all firearms, mostly rifles, were licensed. Only two country made pistols seized from the scene had been managed by police.

This was for the first time that the police conducted such raids on the house of a bank chairman and recovered firearms in such large number.

Vineet had been recently bailed out from the Central Jail. He was lodged in the jail in connection with several cases of henious crimes including murder, kidnapping and extortion. His area of criminal activities has been Lucknow, Faizabad, Varanasi and Ranchi. Two years back he was arrested by the Jharkhand police. Later, the Varanasi Police brought him here on the basis of Warrant B. He had been elected as the bank chairman while in jail last year.
