The Coast Guard today evacuated a Filipino mariner from an oil tanker off Vizhinjam harbour after he was injured while working in the ship's slope tank.

The injured mariner was identified as John Ian Pujanes (34), a crew member of Oil tanker M V Spoless, a Coast Guard release said here today.

The master of the oil tanker sent a distress message to Coast Guard Maritime search and rescue Centre in Mumbai which in turn passed on the information to the Coast Guard Station at Vizhinjam in Thiruvananthapuram, the release said.
Immediately, Coast Guard ship C-134 was sent to evacuate John and he was admitted to the Medical College here for treatment.
The tanker was on voyage from Singapore to Fujiera in UAE.
