Broadway hit The Colour Purple has broken New York box office records by earning about $1.1 million in a week.

The musical celebrating its 250th performance on Saturday has been one of the top five grossing shows on Broadway since it opened at the end of last November.
The stage musical adaptation of Steven Spielberg's acclaimed 1985 movie made history for the week ending on 18 June 2006, and then trumped itself by scoring $1.12 million and $1.34 million in successive weeks, reports Contactmusic.
The music adaptation from Alice Walker's novel beat the existing house record tally of $1.01 million, held by ‘La Boheme’.
