On Friday, a journalist was abused and manhandled by parking staff when he demanded a proper parking slip. Although he contacted the police, no one turned up.

The police had sought cancellation of the contract after many commuters approached them with complaints. According to a senior police official, the city police had written to the DMRC seeking cancellation of the parking contract.

DMRC sources, however, said a decision on this has not yet been taken.

The same contractor is operating the MG Road Metro station parking. "The parking operator, Dheeraj Gupta, was booked under the sections of 420, 467, 471, and 120(B) on the complaint of a lawyer. He was sent to jail on December 5. However, the accused is out on bail and running the parkings. His licence should have been cancelled but the DMRC is doing nothing," said a police official who does not want to be named.

"Parking staff often misbehave with vehicle owners. Even after we approached the police, there has been no action against them," said Raj Singh, a commuter.

The Huda City Centre and MG Road parking lots are the busiest in the city. The police said the parking operator gives sub-contract to others as he doesn't have the resources to operate both. Most of the staff employed by the sub-contractors are abusive and unruly. Many of them are not verified also. "Vehicle owners have no option but to put up with them," said the police official.

"Most of the parking attendants are migrant labourers whose antecedents are a suspect. They often misbehave with the commuters. We are trying to address these issues and will take appropriate action," said Maheshwar Dayal, DCP (east), Gurgaon police.

Earlier, Poonam Singh, SHO, Metro police station, was suspended following complaints from commuters that she had misbehaved with them. According to a senior police official, there were complaints that she had also demanded bribe from a parking contractor.
