On the orders of party general secretary Rahul Gandhi, Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) president Rita Bahuguna Joshi visited Patkhauli village in Amethi, 26 km from Lucknow, to meet the family of the victim, who was killed on Monday.

Four Congressmen have been murdered in the past five years in Amethi, Gandhi’s Lok Sabha constituency.

Gandhi has assured the family that he will take care of the education of Shukla’s children and its other needs. The local Congress unit was also extending all possible to the victim’s family, Joshi said.

After returning from Amethi, Joshi wrote to Chief Minister Mayawati and DGP Karamveer Singh, demanding action against the accused.

She said a BSP MLA could have had a hand in the murder. The murder had falsified Mayawati’s claim that criminals were being thrown out of the chief minister’s party, the BSP, she said.
