The clash broke out around 9 am outside the Harabhanga polling station in Gossaigaon after supporters of three candidates complained that an EVM machine was malfunctioning.

When the situation worsened, the policemen on duty at the polling station resorted to firing blanks. The mob retaliated and some persons tried snatch away the rifles from the policemen.

The slain constable was identified as Tinku Raonghang of 8th Assam police battalion, said LR Visnoi, inspector general (IG), Bodoland Territorial Areas District.
Besides, polling had to be stopped for a while at five polling stations when supporters of candidates destroyed EVMs.
