A senior police officer said militants fired from close range at a police constable in Kakpora town of Pulwama, 25 km from here, in the afternoon. He was taken to hospital where his condition is now stable.

"The police constable was fired at with a pistol and sustained a bullet wound in his leg. He was taken to hospital. Doctors said the constable is out of danger," the police officer said.

Opposition People's Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti, who is contesting the Lok Sabha poll from south Kashmir's Anantnag constituency, had earlier on Saturday addressed a public meeting in Kakpora town.
