The constable has been suspended.

“The police intervened and brought the situation under control. Following a complaint from the shop owner, we have registered an offence against 50-60 persons for unlawful assembly and rioting,” said Additional Commissioner of Police Vivek Phansalkar. He refused to give the name of the constable.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone I) Vikram Deshmane said the constable had gone to the locality to warn women fishmongers.

“The Rabodi police had received an application regarding the noise made by the fish mongers. Since the board exams are taking place, they had asked us to warn the vendors to keep their voices low. A police, two women constable and a constable were sent for the purpose,” said Deshmane. The police are not taking any chances and have deployed additional force, including three platoons of state reserve police force, in the area.
