The Pushp Vihar resident was one of the first to be picked up by the cops for questioning. Nearly every police team, the Crime Branch, the Special Cell and the four teams constituted by the South district to investigate the case have visited his home.

The man fits the description of the rapist given to the police by the diplomat. He speaks English, has travelled the world, is clean shaven and has previously been involved in similar cases. Unfortunately for the police he also has a strong alibi for the night.

The police have interrogated 6,000 people over the last two weeks and checked the alibis of 1,000 of them. Commissioner of Police R.S. Gupta calls it one of the biggest-ever manhunts undertaken by the Delhi Police.

The cops have left no stone unturned and hope for a breakthrough within this week. They have identified two persons who, in police parlance have shown a 'positive identification'.

"We have picked up all kinds of people, college students, businessmen, shopkeepers, muscle builders, sportsmen, MNC executives, etc.," said a police official.

The investigation has thrown up interesting situations. One of the teams recently arrested a businessman, who they thought was the rapist. When asked about his whereabouts on that particular evening, the man told the police that he just drove around South Delhi for three hours.

His cellphone records suggested that he was in South Delhi.

The real story, however, came out after hours of interrogation. He was with another woman during the time and did not want his wife to know of his affair.
