Two of the kidnappers, Ajai Pandey and Manoj Tewari, who were arrested in Delhi, had told the police that they had murdered Sunny on October 26 after realising that the police were on their trail.

Son of industrialist Babban Prasad, a resident of Madrasi Colony on Palam Dabri Road, Sunny was kidnapped while returning home from school on October 24.

He was taken to Pratapgarh by the two kidnappers who belonged to the district.

The kidnappers had purchased a SIM card from Babaganj in Pratapgarh and had asked Sunny’s father to pay Rs 20 lakh as ransom for the release of their son.

Meanwhile, the police had followed the kidnappers but after reportedly failing to find them, returned to Delhi where the duo were arrested.

On interrogation, the arrested duo first tried to mislead the police, saying that they had abandoned the boy in the Kashi Vishwanath Express in Pratapgarh.

However, they later broke down under police pressure and accepted that they had killed Sunny and dumped his body in Sharda Sahayak Canal near Raniganj.

Following this lead, the Delhi police came to Pratapgarh and conducted an inquiry in the areas falling in the jurisdiction of Raniganj and Fatanpur police stations.

Later, they came to know that some villagers of Ashapur had spotted the body of a child in a sack. He was wearing jeans. The villagers had told the police about this but at that time, the police had not bothered to follow up the lead.
SP Pratapgarh Prem Prakash told Hindustan Times that a four-member Delhi police team had been handling the case. He was, however, not aware of the team’s present location. He said the arrested persons had no criminal record in the district.
