Around 1.30 pm on Tuesday, the police got information that two men on a bike snatched a gold chain from a woman in Bhoiwada and were heading towards the city. Around 400 policemen in plainclothes fanned across city roads. “We immediately conducted nakabandis in the central region,” said Sadanad Date, additional police commissioner (central region).

After snatching a mangalsutra from a woman near BIT chawl in Worli, the duo was heading towards Haji Ali, when the police accosted them near Mela junction in Worli.

The police stopped the two men at 3 pm. Sheikh, who was riding pillion, was frisked by the police. “Five mangalsutras and a chopper were found in his possession. The other accused speed away in the bike,” said a police officer. “Sheikh revealed that sometimes they used to rob around 20 chains and mangalsutras a day,” said senior inspector Bharat Worlikar.
