"The police resorted to blank fire after constable Chittaranjan Das suffered gunshot injuries with the two groups clashing with bombs and firearms," said officer in-charge of Khanakul police station S Das.

The trouble started after some armed men, stated to be CPI(M) supporters, raided houses of Trinamool Congress workers at Ishanpara, Katapukur and other adjacent villages with bombs and firearms.

Six Trinamool activists were injured in the attack, the police said adding that constable Chittaranjan Das was injured in the leg when a police team rushed in to disperse the clashing groups.

Hooghly SP Satyajit Bandopadhyay said that an inquiry was on to identify the attackers.

Tension was prevailing in the area, he said adding the situation was under control.
