A CRPF constable went berserk and shot dead four of his colleagues.
Another person was injured inside a security camp in Hawal area on Wednesday after allegedly being denied leave.
Constable Avatar Singh opened indiscriminate fire at his colleagues inside the Firdous cinema camp, housing the CRPF's 96th batallion after he was allegedly denied permission to proceed on leave, officials said.
The five CRPF men were rushed to nearby Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, Soura, where four were declared brought dead and one was battling for life, they said.
CRPF officials, including its spokesman, declined to comment on the incident.
The sound of firing had led the security agencies to believe that militants had struck the camp on the eve of the Republic Day.
Senior police officials rushed to the spot immediately but were not allowed to enter the camp by CRPF men, they said.
It was not clear whether the erring constable has been arrested yet, they added.
