Delhi, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh could be the first states to get round-the-clock electricity. A plan to this effect is lying with the power ministry and a decision is expected to be taken shortly.
“The plan for uninterrupted power supply to Delhi, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh has been discussed with the states. We are committed to providing uninterrupted, cheap and quality power to people,” Union power minister Piyush Goyal said. Providing electricity and other basic facility to every household is BJP’s poll promise.
The government has also decided to replace all thermal power plants that are 25 year old with new technology and they will be converted into super critical power stations with more production capacity. In long term, the Centre also plans to bring down the power tariff by improving the plant load factors, cutting on import of coal and increasing efficiency.
Goyal said representatives of 17 states, including eight chief ministers, have met him during the last three months to flag issues, many of which have already been resolved. Incidentally, a meeting between Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and Goyal is yet to take place despite ‘repeated attempts’ by the power minister.
Last week, Yadav had blamed the Centre for power crisis in country’s most populous state.
