A deputy chief medical officer allegedly attempted suicide by setting himself on fire at his residence, police said in Gonda, situated 125 km north east of the state capital Lucknow.

Doctor Gayasul Hasan set himself on fire on Wednesday evening after which he was rushed to the district hospital where his condition was stated to be out of danger, they said.

Police said Hasan was upset after his daughter and sister died recently.
