One of the earliest designed logos still in use today is that of the dog Nipper sitting in front of a phonograph and listening intently. Inspired by a Francis Barraud painting titled 'His Master's Voice', the logo made its debut in 1910 and was used by HMV for many years.

* Edward C Walker created the lava lamp while trying to redesign a wax-based egg timer he had seen in a pub.

* Nicolas Cugnot, a French military engineer, designed the first ever self-propelled car in 1769. The steam-powered road vehicle was built at the Paris arsenal and was capable of attaining speeds of up to 6 kmh.
