Dharna against poor civic amenities

THOUGH THIRTY-TWO per cent increase has been registered in the annual income of the municipal corporation, the basic amenities have been reduced. As a consequence, residents of various wards took out a procession and staged a dharna at the municipal commissioner office to vent their ire against the apathetic attitude of the municipal corporation officials in providing basic amenities to the residents of ward number 36.

The members of the BJP traders’ cell took out a procession from Diwan Bazar and an office-bearer Narain Chaurasia condemned the corporation officials for their insensitive attitude to check the mosquito menace. He said piles of garbage, overflowing, choked drains and out of order hand pumps were common features of the wards.

Coordinators of the traders’ cell Prakash Singh and Anil Singh said the condition in other wards was also the same. People had been left to the mercy of God and Gorakhpur Nagar Nigam had turned a blind eye to irregularities. They blamed the corporation employees for only focussing on collection of taxes.

Meanwhile, district magistrate and administrator of Municipal Corporation Dr Hariom claimed here that the corporation had registered a 32.39 per cent increase in annual income in comparison to last year. He said since January 1, when he had taken charge as municipal commissioner, 18 new handpumps had been bored in 12 wards. The pipeline for water supply had been expanded and construction of nine big drains was completed.

Dr Hariom said that with the objective to ease the traffic pressure, the Municipal Corporation had decided to develop temporary car parking at Kachehri Club in Gorakhpur. He said the haphazard parking of vehicles would be checked in other areas too.
