Mamata Banerjee claimed the police watched as the goons went on the rampage. “They sat a little distance away and watched it all,” said a family member.

“If party workers can enter my house and attack my mother, then what will happen to common folks. Is there any law and order in the state? Mamata asked.

Mamata’s sister-in-law Rina said: “Around 7.30 pm, a gang of CPI(M) workers barged into our home. They threatened to attack us. As my mother-in-law stepped out, she was pushed. While she slumped to the ground, some of them hit her with sticks.”

Mamata alleged the group led by CPI(M) leader Poltu Chowdhury. “Even after the incident, no additional police force was posted outside our house.” Rubbishing her charge, Chowdhury said: “Would anyone believe that on election day, our men would attack Mamata’s mother at her residence? The entire incident has been cooked up.”
