Prabhakaran had gone to the area after he received a call that some persons were distributing free sarees and dhotis to people at Karattadipalayam.

The two persons had pounced on him and started beating him indiscriminately. They also stabbed him, police said.

Prabhakaran, who is contesting for the L Kallipatty Panchayat President's post, has been hospitalised, police added.

The local body polls is being held in two phases on October 17 and 19.
