Dogs play saviour to abandoned baby!
SHE WAS buried alive to meet death. But the hands of destiny proved mightier than death. More than half a dozen dogs not only stood guard around this just born baby girl, but they also removed the earth and mud with which the child was covered in the pit. With this rare canine gesture, the newborn baby remained alive. This was not all. More than half a dozen dogs not only stood guard around this just born baby girl, but they also removed the earth and mud with which the child was covered in the pit. With this rare canine gesture, the newborn baby remained alive.
This was not all. The battery of dogs, facing the village, kept barking to attract human help and continued to do so till the child was picked up by the villagers, said an astonished eyewitness.
This real life bizarre episode took place 15 km from the city at Dharampur Dhurwa village under Tharwai police station around 2.30 a.m. Wednesday night.
Though the residents of this village had become alert due to continuous barking of dogs, they avoided going near the field for a few hours. It was after a resident of this village went out for nature's call in this direction that the news spread like a wild fire, forcing others to throng the field.
What met their eyes was shocking indeed! In a bid to do away with the girl child somebody had dug up a small grave and, after putting the child in it, had covered it with earth.
But human smell attracted the dogs, who did their best to keep the baby breathing. The dogs left the spot only after seeing the villagers approaching them.
When the baby was brought out there was mud in her mouth and nostrils. Due to some injury there was blood in one corner of the child's face. She could barely breathe, said Doodh Nath, who calls it nature's marvel and the child as a gift of god.
Though womenfolk of this village tried to comfort the child by cleaning her muddy body, nobody was ready to keep her.
While discussions over the child's identity were going on in this village a kilometre away Shivkumari, a mother of three children in Sakra village, made up her mind to adopt the child and save her life. She was offering flowers to god when news about this child reached her village.
The first thing which flashed her mind was, she would be committing a sin if she left the child in the lurch and did not adopt her, she told HT Allahabad Live. With this thought when she reached the neighbouring village she saw policemen there.
For a moment, she thought they would not let her adopt the child but her happiness knew no bounds when cops readily agreed but only after some entries at the police station.
The first thing she did was to rush to nearby Hartmanganj Hospital where nurses and doctors took good care of the child but later referred her to a plastic surgeon in the town for a stitch in the corner of her mouth.
All this was done without wasting any time as Shivkumari wanted to be assured that the child had not developed pneumonic symptoms after remaining in the cold under difficult situation for more than two hours. But her efforts brought happiness not in her family alone but also the entire villagefolks are praising her for the bold decision she took even without consulting her husband Amar Bahadur Bhartiya.
Christened as 'Bhumika' (because she was dug up from the field) the child was surrounded by village kids, including Shiv Kumari's three children, who are extremely happy to have a little sister in the house. Now, some others have offered to adopt the child from her but this enthusiastic foster mother is in no mood to part with Bhumika.
She would take more care of her than her own children, she said, holding the child in her lap.
