The Election Commission has said that the AIADMK candidate for Periyakulam Lok Sabha constituency TTV Dinakaran can contest the elections after verifying his passport and related documents sent by the Chief Electoral officer of Tamil Nadu, official sources here said.

The Theni District collector and Periyakulam Electoral officer also held all the 33 nominations, including the nomination of TTV Dinakaran as valid.

The Election Commission had called for the documents of Dinakaran, including his passport following a complaint from Janata Party President Dr Subramanian Swamy that TTV Dinakaran was a "self-confessed non-resident Indian and hence is not entitled to vote or contest in elections in India."

Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer Mruthunjay Sarangi, who was asked to verify Dinakaran's passport to see whether he was an NRI or not, said in his report that Dinakaran was holding an Indian passport of 1991 and his name also appears in the electoral rolls, EC sources said.
