The boy and his three brothers - all minors - were trying to recreate a death scene, where the victim had been hanged as punishment. Their parents were not around at the time.

The eight-year-old was assigned the part of the victim and the others thrust his head into a noose.

"But the knot was pulled so tight that the child choked. He was declared dead on arrival at the local hospital," said Ramesh Singh, sarpanch of the Kasiyan village, where the incident occurred.

"I was cooking and their father (village chaukidar Santosh Yadav) had gone out for work. The children said they were enacting some television serial," said the boy's mother.

Blaming the fatality on negligence by the family, Vinod Singh Gunjiyal, district magistrate of Buxar, said the family could lodge a case at the local police station.

But Raghunath Singh, station house officer of Dumraon police station, said no case had been lodged till Monday afternoon. "In fact, the family performed the last rites of the boy without even a postmortem," he said.
