THEY HAD planned their marriages in style, but now find themselves ‘voted out’.
At least four families of the city have been affected by the decision of the district administration to allot the Mahanagar Kalyan Mandap for filing of nominations during the urban local bodies poll.
The families of Virendra Kumar Pandey, OP Srivastava, Krishna Kumar Singh, Abhishek Wudkoti had booked the Mandap as the venue for the marriage of their sons and daughters and as early as six months ago.
They had also deposited the fee (Rs 7112) along with the security deposit (Rs 5000) for the place.
Two days ago, these families received an oral communication from the LMC informing them that their booking had been cancelled in wake of the Mandap being allotted for the filing of nominations during the urban local bodies polls.
The families were shocked at the decision, as some of them had even distributed invitation cards. And it’s the insensitivity of the district administration and Lucknow Municipal Corporation officials that has hurt them most.
Now, they have either booked another venue or decided to hold the marriage at their house. Family members of Pandey informed that they have booked Srinath Lawns in Vigyanpuri and the additional expenses have come hard on them. The Wudkoti family has decided to organise the ceremony at their house.
“What can we do if the booking is cancelled at the eleventh hour. The marriage will take place at our house,” said Shipra Wudkoti, cousin of the bride.
Angry residents tried to meet DM Ramendra Tripathi, who, according to them, expressed helplessness in the matter saying that he had to follow the directions of the election commissioner.
But Tripathi has offered to help out the families. “I have directed the municipal commissioner to allot an alternative place to the affected families. Still, if the families want to hold the function at the same place, we will make the lawns available to them,” he said.
However, he was non-committal about the availability of rooms, as they were notified. “We are sorry for the families, but we have no options, as the elections were declared all of a sudden,” he added.
Additional municipal commissioner, Harveer Singh too has assured the affected families of help from the Lucknow Municipal Corporation.
“The best we can do now is to offer them the other Kalyan Mandaps if they are available,” he said. Its up to the families now, if they want they can contact us, he added.
