The report 50% quota for women in panchayats cleared (August 28) is a positive sign of things to come. By increasing the women’s quota from 33 per cent to 50 per cent in panchayats and urban local bodies, the UPA government has given women the power to have a say in debates over important matters — like dowry, harassment, discrimination and inheritance — which were so far decided by men alone. Many congratulations to Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister C.P. Joshi, for taking such a bold initiative.
