Ex-councillor convicted for killing colleague

Former Delhi councillor Sharda Jain is held guilty for killing Atma Ram Gupta four years ago, reports Naziya Alvi.

A Delhi court on Thursday found former Congress councillor Sharda Jain and five others guilty of murdering fellow councillor Atma Ram Gupta in August 2002. It also held three Uttar Pradesh policemen guilty of helping the accused to destroy evidence.

The court will pronounce its sentence on Friday.

According to the prosecution, Jain and Gupta shared an intimate relationship. But when Gupta started paying more attention to another woman councillor, Jain plotted to kill him. Gupta's body was found in Ghaziabad on August 30, 2002, six days after he went missing.

Additional Sessions Judge Bharat Parashar said it was a story of "how vicious a lady can be in the lust for love and power".
