Former CPI(M) MLA Dilip Sarkar was shot dead near Burnpur in Burdwan district on Sunday morning around 6.45am when he was out for his morning walk, following which the party called a 12-hour bandh in the area on Monday.

Sarkar had been MLA from 2006 to 2011.
The police said a man and a woman came by bike and shot him. Local people took him to hospital, where he was declared brought dead. The police are investigating the murder. CPI(M) district secretary Amal Halder told HT Sarkar was in charge of the upcoming panchayat elections.
