Experts call to tap wind energy

EXPRESSING CONCERN over alarming shortage of conventional sources of energy, Delhi’s Energy and Transport Minister Haroon Yusuf today stressed the need of tapping wind power as a non-polluting and abundant source of alternative energy.

He was speaking as the chief guest after inaugurating the international conference on `Wind Energy: Trends and Issues’ (WETI-2006) at the National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research (NITTTR) auditorium here
today.

He stated that wind power projects are easy to implement and provide fast results. Moreover, setting up of such a plant does not involve social dislocation of people living in the area, Yusuf pointed out. He stressed the need of discussing socio-economic and technological issues involved in wind technology during the conference.

NITTTR chairman Dr Mahendra Singh Chauhan informed that presently India is fourth in the world in generation of wind energy. He expressed the hope that in near future the country would reach the number one spot due to the concerted efforts of professionals, business houses and governments.

He thanked Union Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh for his valuable support and direction for organising such a major international event.

MP Urja Vikas Nigam chairman Dilip Singh Shekhawat informed that the State has immense potential in the field but only the bare minimum was being utilised so far.

He said that the State Government is planning to revise energy related policies so that more wind energy plants could be installed.

In his key note address, Centre for Wind Energy Technology (C-WET) Chennai Executive Director Dr MP Ramesh said that India has a potential of generating 45000 mw electricity through wind energy. He pointed out that sincere efforts were required in the field and there was also need for addressing various specific issues involved in this technology.

He informed that the Union Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources had established the C-WET in order to see and orderly growth of wind energy technology and to take care of the technical aspects of the field.

Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology (MANIT) Bhopal chairman Shiv Kumar Jhalani in his presidential speech said that God had endowed mankind with five natural elements and all that was required was to utilise them for the benefit of humans.

He stressed the need of developing hybrid power so that nature’s elements could be exploited in a better way.

NITTTR director Prof K K Srivastava explained about the initiatives taken up by the institute in the field of wind energy while the conference’s convener Prof Joshua Earnest explained the objectives of the conference.

The inaugural ceremony was followed by technical sessions in which papers were presented by professionals and educationists in the field of wind energy.
